About Department of Botany

The Department of Botany, established by the great visionary and an eminent scientist Late Prof. (Dr.) A. Abraham, had always excelled in upbringing vibrant, innovative, updated and dynamic curriculum for the highest quality education. The department is well renowned centre for plant science education and research and internationally acclaimed for its benefaction in cytogenetics and cytotaxonomy. The faculty of the department fabricates potent curriculum with definite course goals by participating as members of the Academic Councils and University Syndicate and by seeking advice from subject specialists. The department follows the credits and semester system for the post graduate courses from 1995 admissions, introduced by the University of Kerala. The department offers a unique M. Sc. course in Genetics and Plant Breeding in a vision to make students more oriented to both classical and applied plant science. The course emphasize on basic genetics, cytogenetics, plant breeding, biochemistry, quantitative genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology, genetic engineering and plant biosystematics. Equal weightage is also given practicals and exercises based on these topics for the deeper understanding of the concepts. The curriculum for this exquisite course is implemented to provide bounteous knowledge and open vast horizons to upcoming young talents in plant science with special awareness to modern trends in molecular biology, plant breeding and plant biosystematics. The course accentuates to provide a quality education in plant sciences and to furnish a platform for the basic and applied research opportunities in the area of botany for the human welfare. Recently, the department had started a new PG programme in Biodiversity and conservation. The curriculum for this course prioritizes in the management and sustainable use of our natural resources. The course highlights fundamental ecological principles and methodologies for the conservation of species and habitats. The course addresses the present challenges such as climatic changes and environmental disasters. The major vision behind this course is to improve the heart and mind for the nature and to answer the economic and social impact of environmental actions through expeditions. The department also offers Extra Departmental Elective courses on areas including Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Cell Culture Technology, Principles of Gardening, Phytochemicals to provide basic information about major applications of plant science for students from various other teaching departments of university. The department conducts M.Phil. programme in Advanced Botany programme and the curriculum for this programme emphasizes on Research Methodology, Advanced topics in Botany, Plant Breeding and Biotechnology. The course provides the students with working knowledge of plant biology and principles are applied to elucidate the mechanisms underlying complex processes in plant bodies. Ph.D. areas of research include biosystematics, biotechnology, tissue culture/cell culture technology, phytochemistry, plant reproductive biology. The proper guideship is provided to researchers to orient them into hard working, diligent and focused scholars with critical way of thinking.
